POD 1: Racial & Economic Justice

Covid’s differential health and economic impacts, and last summer’s worldwide protests for racial justice, invalidated a comforting narrative that “we’re all in this together.” And yet, we are of course together—in communities, in institutions, in classrooms. Many of us are part of institutions that made new aspirational commitments toward racial justice in the past year; and many of us felt a renewed sense of urgency on an individual level, too. How can we move forward from the moment in which we find ourselves, and build greater economic justice, grounded in our unique talents and shared vulnerabilities? In what ways are we teaching about these issues now—and what more is needed?

This convening and its theme were in part an outcome of an ongoing collaboration, supported by the Teagle Foundation, between Franklin & Marshall, Bucknell University, and the University of Pennsylvania—aimed at exploring how liberal arts content, skills, and pedagogies can illuminate the study of business and commerce.
